Learn more about Samchully’s innovative JB Boring Chuck

Thame Workholding has proudly partnered with Samchully to introduce their innovative products to the UK market. Today we would like to tell you a little more about Samchully’s newly patented Jaw Boring (JB) Chuck. This revolutionary chuck reduces set-up time; extends the life of soft jaws; and improves machining accuracy through a revolutionary built-in jaw boring mechanism. This revolutionary design combines the flexibility of boring rings with the precision and convenience of using pre-machined blanks.

Properly bored soft jaws play a crucial role in enhancing both the accuracy and efficiency of turned parts by aligning workpieces precisely along the chuck’s axis of rotation and providing a locating feature that ensures consistent length repeatability. The conventional approach to machining soft jaws involves either using an adjustable boring ring or clamping onto a pre-machined blank seated low in the jaws against the face of the chuck.

While adjustable boring rings offer flexibility, they are difficult and time consuming to adjust.  Achieving the ideal jaw position and setting the master jaws mid-stroke often involves multiple time-consuming adjustments before the actual cutting process begins, significantly increasing setup time. Boring jaws with a pre-machined blank accelerates the boring process with greater accuracy and consistency. However, it requires significant time to calculate and machine a range of blanks to ensure that the jaws are positioned mid-stroke.

The jaw boring chuck features a proprietary rotating sleeve with an ascending ramp seated directly in line with the chuck’s master jaws, and a scale on the face of the chuck facilitates setting the exact amount of material to be removed from the soft jaws. The master jaws clamp directly on the ramp portion of the sleeve during boring, and then the sleeve is rotated to the home position, allowing the chuck jaws to regain full jaw stroke to begin loading parts. The built-in design saves time wasted on chasing down boring rings / pre-machined blanks, as well as cumbersome calculations and adjustments.  Moreover, exact positioning in relation to the stroke enables machinists to take smaller passes, which extends the life of soft jaws.

The JB Chuck is available in four of the most popular sizes: 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12”. This innovative solution from Samchully combines the efficiency of boring rings with the accuracy of pre-machined blanks, offering a versatile and precise solution for machining soft jaws.
